On October 19th , Kesher held its second annual
Parent Leadership Conference in Rehovot,
bringing together over 200 parents raising
children with special needs from across Israel.
The parents, members of Kesher’s “Parents
Building Community” Program, are all
committed to changing the daily reality in
which they and their children live, advocating
on the local level for greater inclusion and
acceptance.
The Conference, which took place in the
shadow of Israel’s ongoing security situation,
offered an island of hope. Although many
families from Arab towns decided not to come
due to the current situation, a small group of
Bedouin mothers did join and the overall
energy was one of hope.
“Parents Building Community” is one of Kesher’s flagship programs as it exemplifies
our belief that with the right knowledge and skills parents are the most effective
agents and advocates for their children. When these parents join together, their
power is even greater.
The Conference focused on subjects chosen by the parents including integrating
children with special needs into the education system, recreation activities, work
opportunities for young adults with special needs and more. The Conference also
launched the national network of parent-led communities – and included many group
building exercises (pictured).
