In late February, Kesher celebrated the completion of its first Supported Decision Making Course. This course, conducted in partnership with Bizchut, introduces parents to the technicalities of supported-decision making, which allows them to serve as advisors to their children with disabilities as they make important life decisions. The course follows Israel’s recent amendment of its Guardianship Law to allow individuals with disabilities to take a more active role in the decisions which affect their lives. The amended law recognizes supported decision-making, in which individuals with disabilities designate people to serve as advisors (rather than appointing professional guardians). Kesher’s course trained family members to take on this role (which previously was filled by state guardians).Twenty eight people took part in the course, and many have now begun the legal process which will allow them to serve as advisors to their children with disabilities, giving them greater agency in the decisions affecting their lives.
