Kibera youth food drive for Kenyans suffering from famine

By Pamela Collett | Communications

Kibera youth food drive for famine victims
Kibera youth food drive for famine victims

The youth of Hot Sun Foundation started an inspiring initiative:  Kibera Kwa WaKenya, which means Kibera for Kenya.  Kibera youth are soliciting dry food goods, including maize meal, rice, dried beans for their brothers and sisters in the northern areas of Kenya who are suffering from famine due to prolonged drought.

Kibera, as the largest slum in East Africa, has received ongoing media attention, often negative, as a place of poverty where people ask for handouts.  Kibera youth are showing their true colors by going to marketplaces, businesses, youth groups and asking for food donations for famine victims.

What has been the response?  Overwhelmingly positive. Many people in Kibera have commented that this is a great idea because it shows the positive side of Kibera, that people are willing to help others.  People of Kibera are inspired by the youth of Hot Sun Foundation.

Other groups and artists have joined with Hot Sun Foundation including Octopizzo, the young hip hop star from Kibera who heads an organization YGB (Young, Gifted and Black), Jah Army, a community organization, Bank Slave, a graffiti artist and Pamoja FM, community radio.

At Hot Sun Foundation, all the youth of Kibera Film School and Kibera TV skipped two lunches this week to donate the proceeds to Kibera Kwa WaKenya.

The Kibera Kwa WaKenya food drive ends on Saturday 27 August 2011 when the youth from Kibera will present  to the Kenya Red Cross the food they have collected.

Kibera TV working with the community youth have made a video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=15f6KT9hfaU We are ready to donate.  Kibera TV has been covering all of the food drive. You can see their videos on YouTube and kiberatv.blogspot.com.

The talent, creativity and community leadership of the youth of Kibera, working with Hot Sun Foundation is making a difference. You can make a difference for them.  Keep the community spirit, the creativity, the possibilities expanding for the youth in Kibera.
