Avuxeni. Mi pfuxile? Mi njhani?
Thanks to your incredible generosity and unwavering support, we have just concluded an extraordinary, high-energy two-week winter camp! We welcomed over 150 children, including 18 of our youngest Cubs, for an unforgettable experience filled with learning, resilience-building, and self-discovery.
The weather in Limpopo was exceptionally cold, but the spirits of our campers remained burning hot. Because of your sponsorship, we were able to provide a safe, structured, and warm environment where young people from all backgrounds could push their limits.
Here is a look at what your donations made possible during this action-packed camp:
1. Scouting Skills & Wilderness Survival
Our camp was designed to accommodate children at vastly different developmental levels, ensuring everyone from our Cubs to our senior Scouts faced age-appropriate, confidence-boosting challenges.
Pioneering & Engineering: The older youth took on advanced pioneering projects, including planning and constructing a massive wooden scaffold structure. This required precise teamwork, knotting skills, and structural safety awareness.
Backwoodsmanship & Survival: The children learned the essentials of wilderness survival. They mastered the art of building shelters, starting fires without matches, and cooking nutritious meals completely without utensils.
Navigation & Safety: We ran comprehensive sessions on map reading, compass work, and basic first aid, and hiking, ensuring that our youth are equipped to handle emergencies both in the bush and in their home communities.
Water Awareness & Protection: Living in areas where water is a precious and sometimes hazardous resource, such as the floods earlier this year, the campers participated in vital water safety training, learning how to stay safe around open water and the importance of conserving and protecting local water sources.
2. Empowering Children: Child Protection Day
At KTD196, physical safety goes hand-in-hand with emotional and social safety. We dedicated a full day of camp to a Child Protection Workshop. For many of these children, this was the first time they were introduced to these concepts in a safe, open environment.
We taught the children:
The Meaning of Child Protection: Understanding that they have a fundamental right to feel safe, respected, and valued.
Identifying Abuse: Discussing in age-appropriate terms what constitutes physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, as well as neglect.
Taking Action: Educating them on exactly what to do if they, or a friend, are victims of abuse.
KTD196’s Role: Reminding them that KTD196 is a safe haven, and showing them how our staff and leaders are always available to intervene, support, and protect them.
3. Youth-Led Governance & Leadership
We believe that true leadership means giving youth a seat at the table. During the camp, our Young Leaders Representative hosted an open forum with the campers.
The goal was to hear directly from the youth about their experiences
What is working well within Limpopo Scouts and KTD196.
Co-creating solutions to make our programs even more impactful.
What challenges they face and what could be improved. These concerns will also be fed back to Scouts South Africa so that National is aware of the issues faced in our province.
The feedback gathered during this meeting has already been shared with our adult leadership team. This ensures we are not just running programs for the youth, but with them, creating a constructive, transparent way forward for the entire organization.
A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Donors
"I learned that I am stronger than the cold, and that I have a voice to speak up if something is wrong." — 14-year-old Camp Participant
An intensive camp of this scale—managing logistics, food, safety, and training materials for over 150 children in freezing conditions—is only possible because of you. Your financial support directly translated into warm meals, safe camp infrastructure, life-saving educational materials, and memories that these children will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
Thank you for investing in the future leaders of South Africa. You are helping us keep the dream alive!
With deep gratitude,
Louise
