Creating a Better Future for Children with Cancer

By Gerever Niwagaba | Executive Director Co-Founder

Children are our Future

“Progress made over the last several decades is improving children’s lives and will continue to do so in the future. The trajectories in survival, life expectancy and education completion continue to rise across all three scenarios.

In other aspects of children’s lives, the future appears less hopeful. The world could become a more unequal place, afflicted by conflict and extreme climate events, where the learning crisis continues and far too many children still experience multiple deprivations.

Three megatrends that will profoundly impact children’s lives between now and 2050: demographics shifts, the climate and environmental crises and frontier technologies. Each will impact children’s daily experiences – how they live, learn, interact and develop.
(In 2023 20.8 million children were displaced in their own countries by conflict and disasters).  (Source UNICEF 2026)

Over 400,000 children each year worldwide develop cancer and 75% of these children live in developing countries. The key issue facing these children is that their cancer is often not diagnosed early and for their families, they face the financial hardship of leaving home to go and get access to treatment for their children.

Our New Hope Children’s hostel is helping to shape a better future for children in our care.

Since inception in 2016 we have cared for 1049 children. In the first half of 2026 we have provided 320 children and their caregiver with free accommodation, 3 daily meals, transfers to the hospital for treatment, medicines and psychosocial support.  5 children are in remission with 5 in palliative care. Sadly, 10 children died from their cancer and the pain and loss for their families is felt by the friends they have made at the hostel and the staff.

Ronald is 22-year-old and he has faced unimaginable challenges in his battle against osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer which was diagnosed in 2019. Despite losing his leg, his education, and many of the opportunities he once dreamed of, Ronald continues to fight for a brighter future. Following his treatment, Ronald was referred to us for psychosocial support, rehabilitation, and continued care.

Ronald's journey has also been blessed by the kindness and, compassion of Rotaractor Paul Waswa of the Rotary Club of Mahaba, supported him in obtaining an artificial limb, and Rotarian Martha from the Rotary Club of Kireka Movers, who is currently supporting Ronald through rehabilitation and training to help him learn how to effectively use his artificial limb.

Today, Ronald's dream is not only to walk again but also to become self-reliant. Once he completes his mobility training, he hopes to enrol in a tailoring course, where he can learn to make bags, clothing, and other products that will enable him to earn a sustainable living and support himself.

Ronald's determination is inspiring. Despite the many setbacks caused by cancer, he remains focused on building a productive future. He is eager to learn, work hard, and become financially independent.

He is seeking sponsorship to undertake vocational training in tailoring. This opportunity would equip him with practical skills, enabling him to generate income, restore his dignity, and become a productive member of his community.

Can you help Ronald to have a better future?

Ronald has overcome extraordinary challenges, but he still needs support to achieve his next goal. He is seeking sponsorship to undertake vocational training in tailoring. The 12 month course is US$1,931.48. and it includes a start up kit of a sewing machine, scissors, etc.

This opportunity would equip him with practical skills, enabling him to generate income, restore his dignity, and become a productive member of his community.

You would not only fund his course but help a young cancer survivor rebuild his life, regain his independence, and have a new future to look forward to. If you wish to know more you can contact Diana on: info@kawempehomecare.org

We are grateful for the support we continue to receive from our local and international friends. Thank You.
