The Shalom Center for Elder Abuse
The Shalom Center for the prevention of elder abuse, operated in partnership with Cedar Village, is the only shelter for victims of elder abuse in the tri-state area and one of only 13 in the nation. All of the services provided at the Shalom Center are completely free to those in need. As there is no cost, help from the community and all donations continues to be vital. Victims age 65 and better are able to heal safely and confidentially here.
Challenge:
Elder Abuse has come to the surface even more intensely recently, with the changes in healthcare insurance. Financial, psychological, emotional and physical abuse in elders has become rampant. Unfortunately, most of these victims have nowhere to turn. Some of the wonderful people who are aware of this heinous problem, would like to help but do not know what they can do. We need to get the word out.
Solution:
Raise awareness among healthcare providers, law enforcement and social services agencies like Aging Adult Protective Services.
The education process reaches out to agencies working with older adults and to other parties who provide non-health related services such as doormen, superintendents, meals on wheels staff, cablevision, beauty parlors, mailpersons, banks, grocery stores, pharmacies, etc.
Help everyone to understand the problem and resources available to our community and beyond.
The Shalom Center is one of the very few places locally, in which abused elders can have a safe and secure place to go, with people who genuinely care, and many services right at their fingertips.
Cedar Village had an extremely successful event as its 2017 Shalom Sprint raised funds, spirits and awareness for the Shalom Center. The Cedar Village Shalom Sprint involved the community, friends and families, therefore, providing the ability to spread the word beyond its boundaries. It was held at a public park and everyone was welcome to participate. With this event, the word was spread throughout the community, and continues to do so.
