The Shalom Center For Elder Abuse

The Shalom Center for the prevention of elder abuse, operated in partnership with Cedar Village, is the only shelter for victims of elder abuse in the tri-state area and one of only 13 in the nation.  All of the services provided at the Shalom Center are completely free to those in need.  As there is no cost, help from the community and all donations continues to be vital.  Victims age 65 and better are able to heal safely and confidentially here.

Challenge:

The National Council on Aging estimates that one in every 10 Americans aged 60 or beyond has experienced some form of elder abuse or neglect.  Some estimates say the number of victims could be as high as 5 million older Americans per year, and it’s estimated that only one in every 14 cases is reported to authorities.

Solution:

Raise awareness among healthcare providers, law enforcement and social services agencies like Aging Adult Protective Services.

The education process reaches out to agencies working with older adults and two other parties who provide non-health related services such as doormen, superintendents, meals on wheels staff, cablevision, beauty parlors, mailpersons, banks, grocery stores, pharmacies, etc.

Help everyone to understand the problem and resources available for our community.

Cedar Village had its most successful event as its 2016 Shalom Sprint raised funds, spirits and awareness for the Shalom Center.
