In the Fox Valley region, black women consistently experience many struggles, especially those that are raising kids on their own with little to no support. These struggles often include difficulties in getting financial support, the stress of taking care of a young one, or feeling anxious for the future with limited resources.
Over the past year, Pointters Community Initiatives have been leading a unique opportunity for minority women in the Fox Valley to get together in our office space and talk about their issues and how we can support them. This program was initially called the Tea Talk program, named after the expression "Spill the Tea", but through the recommendation of the women that we've talked to as well as some partners that learned of our group, we renamed the project to HERS (Healing, Empowerment, and Resiliance for Sisters). HERS group meets every second and fourth Thursday of the month, and they discuss a variety of topics that they've experienced, from harrassment in the workplace to seeking support for pregnant and expecting mothers. Reception to the program has been immensely positive from the women that we've interacted with, and a few of our supporters stand out.
One such supporter is a woman named Latrina. When she initially came to us, she was experiencing many challenges in life, including feelings of helplessness and depression. PCI stepped into help with our HERS group, and since then her life has improved. Her mood has gotten better, she feels safer, and she continues to persue any opportunity to volunteer with us or help us out. Since joining HERS, she has been a forefront believer in the program and wants to continue expanding support for minority women in the Fox Valley. She has reached out to many members of her church group and the community, and continues to provide support, suggestions, and feedback to keep HERS going strong.
We're very grateful of the progress we've made with HERS, and are looking forward to continuing to bring this program to other minority women in the community and provide the support and help they desperatly need.
