Dear Donors:

We officially launched the Kakamega Rainforest Restoration Project on March 12 2022 at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Iloro, Kakamega County, western Kenya. The launch site is on a bluff overlooking the forest, which is visible in the background of the photo of the woman dancing with a bunch of rosemary.

The launch, which we had planned for 50-75 guests, had over 100 attendees. We don't know exactly how many people were there, because the attendance sheet ran out of space at signature number 91. Yet, despite an overflowing crowd, we did not run out of delicious food for our enthusiastic guests.

We accomplished the launch on a very tight budget, because we want to spend our money on restoring the forest and supporting Income-Generating Activities IGAs) for farmers next to the forest that are compatible with forest ecology (beekeeping, mushroom cultivation and agroforestry using native tree species) - not on throwing parties! But it was a VERY animated event.

The ceremony was opened by children from Iloro Primary School performing a song and dance about the importance of the forest to their community. A series of speakers followed with topics ranging from the spiritual importance of humanity's role as loving and responsible stewards of God's creation to the financial opportunities presented by the project's IGAs. Speakers touched on everything from the history and ecology of the Kakamega Rainforest to beekeeping and growing mushrooms to watershed rehabilitation.

Following the ceremony, a few VIPs planted seedlings of trees native to the forest on the grounds of the church.

Then we bonded over lunch.

It was a full, fun and beneficial day as we accomplished our objectives of:

1. Informing the community, especially small farmers who will participate in the project, about the project components, and

2.  Generating a LOT of excitement in this impoverished, rural area.

We hope you all will participate in "growing" our efforts during GlobalGiving's "Little by Little" campaign, which will take place from 4 to 8 April 2022. GG will offer a 50% match on all donations up to US$50 all week.

Thank you so much for making our dreams a reality.
