It was a beautiful, sunny day in Atlanta when Kids In Distressed Situations (K.I.D.S.) and Delta Children’s Products, a 45-year-old family business, joined Caring for Others, Inc. on May 21 to establish a Safe Sleep center as part of our nationwide campaign.
The event, hosted by Caring for Others President Eslene Richmond-Shockey, educated local parents about ways to keep their infants safe in the first year of their lives and culminated in Delta Children’s Products’ donation of new cribs —valued at a total of $60,000— to the families. The donation was part of K.I.D.S./Delta’s SIDS prevention initiative, which is backed by a commitment to give away $1 million worth of cribs to families in need nationwide.
“This is an ongoing effort and commitment on our part to educate parents nationwide on the importance of safe sleeping conditions for their children,” said Delta Children President Joseph Shamie. “As a father myself, I don’t sleep at night unless I know babies are safe in our cribs.”
Atlanta was the fourth stop in a nationwide tour in partnership with K.I.D.S. to share important safety messages with parents across the U.S. The cribs were given to pre-registered families through Caring For Others, which facilitates economically disadvantaged individuals. K.I.D.S. supports Delta’s initiatives and is the brand’s partner on this journey.
“We at K.I.D.S. are very excited to partner with Delta Children to combine new product donations with education and advocacy to reduce the incidence of SIDS in the United States,” said Chris Blake of K.I.D.S.
K.I.D.S. and Delta Children’s Products were joined for the presentation by Kelly Neal Mariotti, CEO of First Candle, a leading national nonprofit dedicated to infant health and survival that provided the safe sleep literature the campaign distributes to parents. Mariotti, who was recently honored as one of four exceptional women leaders at the Women in Industry Luncheon to benefit K.I.D.S. and its sister charity Fashion Delivers, expressed her sincere thanks to the organizations for spearheading the effort.
“Ensuring that every parent and caregiver is aware of how to protect their baby during sleep has the potential to literally save thousands of precious lives for generations to come,” she said.
Fashion Delivers also provided the mothers in the program with much-needed apparel and accessories.
