This effort will support Free Yezidi Foundation as we seek justice and accountability for crimes committed by ISIS against Yezidis of Iraq. Thousands of Yezidi women and children were kidnapped in august 2014, men were killed. women and girls were sold as sex slaves in Iraqi and Syrian markets and subjected to unspeakable rape, abuse, and psychological torment. They want their day in court!
In August 2014, ISIS militants swept through Sinjar in northern Iraq in a deliberate attempt to annihilate the Yezidis, an ethnoreligious minority. They employed brutal tactics including mass executions, rape, forced conscription of children, and sexual enslavement. In the immediate aftermath of the genocide, thousands of Yezidis were murdered. To this day, 300,000 Yezidis remain displaced and almost 3,000 Yezidi women and children are still missing, with many presumed to be in ISIS captivity.
FYF is among the leading actors seeking justice and accountability for the Yezidi Genocide. This includes a number of activities. This specific project focuses on public advocacy for justice and accountability, and ensuring that FYF's infrastructure can remain in place to ensure the pursuit of justice. Furthermore, it will support FYF's efforts to pursue litigation in various jurisdictions.
Overall efforts to advance justice and accountability for a community suffering from the aftermath of genocide are essential for global accountability norms and the recovery of the community. FYF public advocacy and strategic litigation is an important element of this effort. While FYF operates specific projects funded by other donors in the area of justice and accountability, this project helps support FYF's infrastructure and operations to continue its advocacy and litigation efforts.
