jJunior Genius : nurturing STEM Talent

By Tony Sewell | Junior Genius making it in the early years

In February, Generating Genius students took part in a number of challenging half-term workshops to develop their knowledge of science and maths and STEM careers. At Salesforce Tower, students debated “Big Data”, learned ‘how science works’ and met with employees across the business at one of our corporate supporters.

Generating Genius won over £1000 in education grants from The London Mathematical Society and The Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications to host our first all-day STEM in Action Maths event. Year 11 students tackled math’s unsolved puzzles, made a Domino computer and were introduced to Fractals, with Dr Katie Steckles from Think Maths.

King’s College London hosted a hands-on Clinical Skills session, where year 11 and 12 students learned basic medical skills from current undergraduates and were able to ask questions about life at university. ...

We ended the week with a workshop and campus tour at the School of Physics and Astronomy, Queen Mary University of London. During the Physics at University & Electromagnetic Spectrum workshop, Year 11 students were even challenged to derive Einstein's famous E=mc2 equation

On February 22nd it was with great pride that Generating Genius founder and CEO went to Buckingham Palace to receive an CBE for services to education from HRH Prince of Wales.  I am so pleased to receive this, the A* of honors. Prince Charles  thanked me for services to education and for Generating Genius' role in promoting and delivering, social mobility.  He says:

‘I am accepting the award on behalf of Generating Genius , which means a special thanks to our team, the board of trustees and of course our sponsors and supporters.  GG now supports over 200 students on  a STEM pathway to University. We are a small organisation, but having a big impact on social mobility in education; no one else is seeking out much needed STEM talent from under-represented groups of young people. We need to nurture this future talent, in order for the UK economy to thrive and to remain a competitor in the increasingly digital world.  As someone who is from a Jamaican ancestry, I also see this as a way of remembering and honoring the sacrifice of my forebearers in the building of the Empire and modern Britain. ‘

Many thanks to all of you for your support of Generating Genius. We couldn't do it without you.
