With deep gratitude, I am happy to share the incredible success of our 2024 Juneteenth celebration—a day filled with love, learning, and laughter made possible through your generosity. As I recount the beautiful moments, I hope you feel the profound impact your support had on our community.
Imagine the scene: a warm summer day at the historic Shirley-Eustis House, where over 800 children and adults gathered to receive free books that would open new doors to literacy and knowledge. Seeing the joy in a child’s eyes as they held a book, perhaps for the first time, is a moment that will stay with me forever. These books weren’t just gifts; they were investments in the future of Black youth, tools to empower them through the written word.
The air was alive with the sounds of children playing on the playground, their laughter a reminder of the joy that Juneteenth represents. But we didn't stop there. Our sensory activities ensured that even our special needs youth could fully engage, making this a celebration for every child in our community, no matter their abilities.
Our vendor market was a vibrant showcase of local Black-owned businesses. Entrepreneurs from all walks of life had the opportunity to shine, connect, and sell their products to a community eager to support them. Your donations allowed us to create this economic empowerment space, where dollars circulated within our community, helping dreams grow and thrive.
As we taught the history of the Shirley-Eustis House, we honored the resilience and strength of our ancestors. Their stories of perseverance echoed through the day, reminding us of the significance of Juneteenth—freedom delayed but never denied. It was an honor to share this history with our community, ensuring that the legacy of our forebears lives on.
We fed people hotdogs, hamburgers, snacks, cups of lemonade, and water flowed freely. There is something powerful about sharing a meal, about breaking bread together in unity. In those small acts of nourishment, we connect as a community, as a family.
Our celebration was filled with music, rhythm, and the pure, unfiltered joy of being unapologetically Black. We celebrated our freedom, our culture, and, most importantly, each other. We danced to honor our ancestors, celebrate our present, and dream about our future.
None of this would have been possible without you. Your donations didn’t just support an event; they created a space where Black joy, Black love, and Black community thrived. You helped us build a day where our children could feel seen, our businesses could flourish, and our history could be honored.
As we look ahead, we know the work is far from over. The success of this year’s Juneteenth celebration reminds us that there is so much more to do and so many more lives to touch. With your continued support, we can make next year even bigger and more impactful. Together, we can build a future where Black joy knows no bounds.
