Project Report: Upcycle Juba City Trash – From Waste to Wow
Juba is a city of immense potential and energy, but it faces a growing challenge that impacts the health and beauty of our environment: waste management. Currently, the city struggles with accumulation of plastics and discarded materials, which clog drainage systems and degrade local living spaces. Our project, Upcycle Juba City Trash – From Waste to Wow, is our proactive response to this crisis. By turning what is perceived as "trash" into functional, valuable resources, we are not just cleaning the streets—we are changing the mindset of an entire community. This period has been one of deep community engagement, where we have mobilized youth and local families to see waste as an opportunity for economic and environmental renewal.
The true impact of our work is best reflected in the story of residents like , a local artisan who felt discouraged by the pollution in his neighborhood. Through our upcycling workshops, learned how to repurpose plastic waste into durable, aesthetic household goods. For him, the project provided more than just a clean yard; it provided a sense of purpose and a path toward self-reliance. To date, we have diverted significant amounts of waste from local dumping sites and empowered individuals with the skills to turn potential hazards into items that improve their quality of life. Each piece of "trash" we process represents one less threat to our environment and one more step toward a cleaner, greener Juba.
While our commitment to this environmental transformation is stronger than ever, SSGID did not manage to mobilize the required funding during this specific reporting period to scale our collection and workshop capacity as planned. Despite this, our team remains on the ground, working to keep our momentum alive. We are actively inviting individual donors, environmental foundations, and international organizations to support this mission. By contributing through GlobalGiving, you are helping us provide the tools, training, and logistical support needed to make waste management in Juba a sustainable, community-led success story. Help us turn the tide on pollution and prove that with a little creativity, we can truly transform waste into "wow."
