Join the Fight to Save the Fishing Cat

By Anisur Rahman | Project Coordinator

Progress Report: "Join the Fight to Save the Fishing Cat"
Reporting Period: (September 2024 – April 2025)
Organization: Green Fund Initiative (GFI), New York, USA
Local Partner in Bangladesh: Bangladesh Biodiversity Conservation and Social Services Centre (BCSSC)

Project Overview

The "Join the Fight to Save the Fishing Cat" initiative, led by the Green Fund Initiative in collaboration with local partners, focuses on the conservation of the endangered Fishing Cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) in Bangladesh. The project emphasizes habitat protection, community awareness, research, and policy advocacy to address the multiple threats faced by this vulnerable species, including habitat destruction, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict.

Achievements During the Reporting Period

1. Rescue and Habitat Conservation

  • Rescue: During this reporting period, we successfully rescued one baby Fishing Cat from our project area, working in collaboration with our local partner BCSSC and the Bangladesh Forest Department.
  • Care and Rehabilitation: The rescued Fishing Cat was treated for minor injuries at our protected conservation site and, after recovery, was safely released back into its natural habitat.

2. Community Engagement

  • Awareness Campaigns: We conducted targeted community awareness activities, reaching and engaging 80 households in the project area. Through workshops and interactive discussions, we educated local residents on the importance of Fishing Cat conservation and the critical role they can play in protecting this unique species and its wetland habitats.

3. Research and Monitoring

  • Due to funding limitations, no formal research activities were initiated during this period. However, regular volunteer-led monitoring efforts continued to track Fishing Cat presence and habitat conditions across project sites.

4. Policy Advocacy

  • Partnership Building: We maintained a strong collaborative relationship with the Bangladesh Forest Department, focusing on enhancing policy support for Fishing Cat conservation efforts. Discussions are ongoing to strengthen habitat protections and improve enforcement mechanisms.

Challenges Faced

  • Funding Constraints: Lack of financial resources limited the expansion of field research and community programs during this period.
  • Human-Wildlife Conflict: Continued conflict between local communities and Fishing Cats, especially around agricultural zones, remains a challenge that requires sustained community engagement and innovative mitigation strategies.

Conclusion

Despite financial constraints, the "Join the Fight to Save the Fishing Cat" project achieved meaningful progress by rescuing a vulnerable baby Fishing Cat and expanding conservation awareness among 80 local households. These grassroots efforts are vital for building a foundation of community support and safeguarding Fishing Cat populations in Bangladesh. Moving forward, GFI and BCSSC remain committed to strengthening conservation action, seeking new funding opportunities, and working closely with local communities and government agencies to ensure a future where Fishing Cats can thrive in the wild.
