The fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus), listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, faces rapid decline from wetland loss, human-wildlife conflict, and illegal trade. Bangladesh is a critical stronghold for this rare species. Green Fund Initiative works with local partners to rescue injured cats, restore wetland habitats, reduce conflict, and educate communities. Your support helps protect fishing cats while conserving vital ecosystems for people and wildlife.
The fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) is a rare wetland-dependent wild cat listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List and Endangered across much of its range. In Bangladesh, rapid wetland loss, expanding human settlements, retaliatory killings due to conflict, and illegal trapping are driving population decline. Local fishing and farming communities are directly affected, as conflict arises when cats prey on fish stocks, often leading to capture or killing.
We will protect fishing cats through coordinated habitat protection, rescue, and community engagement. The project will rescue cats captured by locals or poachers, provide veterinary treatment and rehabilitation, and return them to safe habitats. We will expand and strengthen protection areas, train community volunteers, form village conservation committees, and work with local authorities to monitor populations and reduce human-wildlife conflict through education and stakeholder collaboration.
This project will secure critical wetland habitats and stabilize fishing cat populations in Bangladesh. By reducing conflict and strengthening local stewardship, communities will benefit from healthier ecosystems and sustainable livelihoods. Long-term outcomes include improved biodiversity, increased climate resilience of wetlands, reduced illegal wildlife trade, and lasting coexistence between people and fishing cats, ensuring the species' survival for future generations.
