AMPATH works to improve the health, education, and pregnancy care of women in Western Kenya. Julie and John are passionate about the well being of women around the world and AMPATH. Julie has been involved with AMPATH since 2011 and will be spending 6 months in Kenya as Team Leader in Obstetrics & Gynaecology after the wedding. Julie shares: "We have more than we could ask for in life to be happy. We are hoping people will redirect any wedding gifts to charities like AMPATH"
Women remain the backbone of the home in Kenya and yet they are often valued the least. Nearly half of Kenyan women who are pregnant are under the age of 19. So many deliver at home without skilled birth attendants and suffer birth trauma, hemorrhage, infection, and maternal or neonatal death. HIV and malaria are two infections that have significant impacts on women and their pregnancies. Cervical cancer remains the most common cancer for women, which is a totally preventable disease.
Your donations are not going to fix the immense poverty many in Kenya face. But it will help support the really fantastic work AMPATH is doing. Upcoming reproductive health projects include developing a teen-focused maternity care program, better screening and treating pathways for women at risk for pre-eclampsia, and door to door pregnancy tests to identify women who need maternity care early or improved family planning counseling.
Give what you can! Our goal is for you to help us celebrate by giving to others. Your donations will go towards supporting AMPATH reproductive health initiatives, research programs, and the individuals running them. We are a bunch of Kenyan and North American academics on two sides of the pond working hard to find evidence based approaches to care improvement that are sustainable.
