Women in STEM
The University Scholarship Program (PBU) was created in 2004 and has an important history of accompanying young people who, for the most part, represent the first generations of university students in their homes in Argentina.
Its differential is in its federal scope, personalized educational support with a focus on socio-emotional skills, specifically adapted to the experience of higher level students. This approach includes five major dimensions of skills related to self-knowledge, collaborative work, determination, cognitive skills, and academic life. The Program also stands out for its competitive scholarship value compared to other civil society organizations, and for its approach to experiences that provide social capital.
One of the main goals of this program is addressing the barriers that women face in pursuing careers in STEM fields, which are traditionally viewed as male dominated. By providing financial aid, personalized mentoring, and opportunities for networking and professional development to these women, we aim to create a more inclusive and equitable environment that will enable them to succeed in their studies and graduate with their careers
We understand that financial aid alone is not enough to enable low income youth to access, persist in and graduate from higher education. This is why our program provides a holistic approach that includes scholarships, mentoring, and opportunities for networking and professional development. This comprehensive support is crucial to assist these young women in developing the socio-emotional skills and strategies that are vital for success in higher education.
The participating female scholarship holders rate the development of the PBU between Excellent and Very Good (with the majority saying “Excellent”). Regarding the support, some of the testimonies state the following:
“Excellent support and very understanding, always attentive to our needs. She is very understanding, enthusiastic, creative and really cares about us. She is always attentive to anything we want to talk about, beyond the monthly meetings, and she is in charge of creating spaces in which we can all participate…”
“She is a support throughout the year, she encourages and motivates you to meet the goals you set for yourself throughout the course… at each meeting she transmits a lot of confidence to us and provides us with very useful tools to apply in our studies and achieve the proposed objectives…”
Regarding the question: What does participating in the University Scholarship Program bring to you? The scholarship recipients stated the following:
“It helped me to know my skills, to be able to implement them, to be able to improve my organization day by day and to set objectives and goals correctly. Obviously not everything can be planned, but with a good action plan, in the event of any inconvenience, everything becomes more possible… “The interaction with other scholarship recipients creates a very unique collaborative environment and generates that feeling of belonging to the faculty that is sometimes lost…”
“It gives me a great desire to continue with the degree since we are always in contact with the tutor and in the meetings I obtain tools that help me to continue the course and face difficulties that are not academic, but are related, for example, to the regulation of emotions, confidence, organization and planning. And also the financial support that is essential in this social moment to be able to obtain material to study…”
“Participating in this program represents a great help, since it connects us with other students, with whom we can share experiences. The accompaniment of the tutor is fundamental. Every month I look forward to this meeting very excitedly to be able to share my progress and concerns. The economic incentive is super important since during all this time, it gave me the possibility to focus on my studies, paying the expenses incurred by the course with said money…”
“Through the program, I not only obtained the necessary financial support for my education, but also practical experiences and learning that I consider help strengthen my academic and professional development by giving me access to resources to improve my soft skills…”
These results are not only a sample of the success of the alliance between Motorola Solutions and Fundación Cimientos, but also reflect a direct impact on SDG 4: Quality Education, which seeks to guarantee access to and completion of education at all levels. In addition, this program is aligned with SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, by ensuring the employability of graduates
