Challenge

Japan is one of the world's most disaster-prone countries, and it needs professional responders with the capacity to rapidly dispatch to conduct search and rescue, provide emergency medical care, and support the needs of disaster survivors. In the latest disaster, a powerful 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck the southern island of Kyushu on July 28, 2026, causing widespread damage in Kumamoto Prefecture.

Solution

Peace Winds immediately dispatched its ARROWS disaster response team, including doctors, nurses, and other disaster response experts. They are working to assess needs on the ground, and we anticipate providing medical care and other support for evacuees. They will remain in Kumamoto to continue meeting the needs of survivors as the situation evolves.

Long-Term Impact

Peace Winds is one of the leading organizations conducting emergency disaster response as well as comprehensive long-term disaster recovery activities in Asia and the Pacific. When the "rescue phase" of disasters ends, they hand off to Peace Winds responders who are experts on long-term relief, recovery, and community rebuilding. Our teams will continue to assess the situation in Kumamoto and provide relief as needs evolve.
