Solving Problems by doing MATH

Overview

We are pleased to share an encouraging update on the progress of our core initiative – the Izibalo Maths Pod, a fully resourced container classroom designed to offer high-quality, free mathematics tutoring to learners in our community. The project represents a significant stride in closing the education gap and empowering young minds with critical maths basics.

The Maths Pod at a Glance

  • Facility: A fully equipped container classroom with cutting edge technology
  • Tutoring Hours: Learners attend a minimum of 3 hours of dedicated maths tutoring per week.
  • Capacity: The Pod can accommodate up to 100 learners per week.
  • Current Enrolment: 65 active learners are participating in the program.

Learner Performance: January–June 2025

We are proud to report that our learners have demonstrated measurable academic progress over the first two quarters of the year:

  • Average Achievement (Q1 & Q2 2025): 55% compared to 49% in 2024
  • This reflects a marked improvement from previous baseline scores and is evidence of consistent learner engagement, quality instruction, and targeted intervention.
  • We also tutor all our grade 8 and 9 (junior high school) learners in English for them to better understand the concepts and questions in Mathematics while improving their critical thinking skills. 48 learners are benefiting from this initiative.
  • Our top grade 10 to 12 (senior high school) benefit from our Physical Sciences Tutoring pilot programme. 12 learners are benefitting from this initiative.

Key Success Factors

  • Trained Tutors: All facilitators are trained using the Izibalo baseline training manual and continue to receive professional support.
  • Resources Provided: Learners are supplied with individual stationery kits, learning materials, and access to digital tools.
  • Supportive Environment: The Pod operates in a secure, internet-connected learning space in the community it serves.

What This Means

The Maths Pod is not just a classroom – it is a space of transformation. Every learner enrolled is receiving individual attention, structure, and encouragement to succeed in a subject many previously struggled with. Their improving results are a testament to the power of your support.

Looking Ahead

We aim to:

  • Increase enrolment to full capacity (100 learners per week)
  • Further improve learner results in the next academic cycle
  • Expand our model to additional sites, depending on resource availability

Thank You

None of this would be possible without the generous support of our donors. Your contributions have provided a foundation for meaningful educational change. Together, we are giving learners the tools to unlock their potential and break the cycle of academic underperformance.

We look forward to sharing continued progress with you in the months ahead.

Warm regards,
The Izibalo Team
