Tutors are young, unemployed STEM graduates from the local community providing them with career pathways in education and STEM fields. Based in East London, South Africa, the Centre is equipped with laptops, internet, modern Math, Science and English software. Serving 100 learners from nearby schools, offering free learner-centered tutoring from ages 14-19. Tutor-to-learner ratio is 1:8. The intake is for learners aged 14 to 15 and to sustain success through to their final year of high school.
In South Africa fewer than two in ten learners pass pure math in Grade 12. The country's future workforce faces being left behind in a world driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and technologies. Without urgent action, the risk is a generation without sufficient math teachers, engineers and the like to compete on the global stage. Schools in the local area have classrooms of over 70 learners aged 13 to 15. Learners drop pure math not because they lack potential, but because they fear failure.
The Math Tutoring Centre serves 100 learners and maintains a tutor-to-learner ratio of 1:8, ensuring personal attention. All learners commit to a minimum of three hours of math tutoring each week. Each learner is tutored over a period of four to five years. Learners register in the project in their Grade 8 / Grade 9 year and continue until they complete their final year. For Grade 10 to Grade12 learners, physical science tutoring is provided. iZibalo provides consistent mentorship and support.
The vision is to empower every learner to excel in mathematics, thereby expanding opportunities for tertiary education and fostering meaningful participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers.
