Israel is home to diverse and unique marine and freshwater ecosystems, including the Red Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Sea of Galilee, the Dead Sea, the Jordan River, and vital wetland habitats - all facing significant environmental challenges. In accordance with the Ministry of Environmental Protection's National Biodiversity Plan in 2010, the Gottesman Family Israel Aquarium in Jerusalem was established to inspire, educate, and empower visitors to protect these remarkable natural treasures.
Israel's unique aquatic ecosystems face an uncertain future. Threats include pollution and overfishing in the Mediterranean Sea; warming waters and human activity damaging the Red Sea's coral reefs; pollution of freshwater habitats and the alarmingly swift shrinking of the iconic Dead Sea. Unless human behavior changes, many native aquatic species could disappear within our lifetime. There is an urgent need to increase public awareness, expand conservation efforts and scientific research.
By educating thousands of people about the importance of aquatic ecosystems, local communities will be inspired and empowered to protect these fragile habitats. Breeding centers for aquatic species will establish vital endangered wildlife conservation populations while advancing expertise and supporting future reintroduction programs. Practical, locally driven conservation initiatives will help address global environmental challenges by inspiring environmental stewardship.
High-quality learning experiences will inspire a new generation of conservation leaders in Israel. Over time, this knowledge and awareness will spread to future generations. Teaching people how to act responsibly around marine habitats can significantly reduce human impacts, while the Aquarium reaches thousands of tourists and local communities each year. Greater environmental awareness will help reverse the decline of aquatic ecosystems by fostering a lasting culture of stewardship.
