We will be assisting families in need of long term recovery support throughout eastern Pennsylvania stemming from tropical storm Isaias. The services provided will be through our disaster case management and damage assessment teams, affording the families the social service support they need to move their recovery from stalled to completed.
Tropical storm Isaias impacted communities across eastern Pennsylvania in a manner that has not been experienced in many years. It was especially hard felt in communities of color and those with a disproportionate number of low-income households. With the denial of a federal disaster declaration, coupled with the heavy blanket of covid19, survivors are not receiving the disaster case management [DCM] they need to support their recovery.
As the tides begin to settle [now] months post disaster and people are done with the muck and gut of their homes, this is usually when they start realizing they don't know what to do next and the phones begin to ring. Initial appointments are made. DCMs work with the client to create goal oriented plans during this process. The DCM becomes a major support to the client, and is able to monitor progress of the goals and re-assess as time goes on.
Disaster Recovery is a long process for survivors without the financial resources. With the help of the DCM, community, state and government resources can be accessible. DCMs advocate for the client with the resources and provides the guidance to the survivor for their benefit. DCMs assess the client's unmet needs; help create goal-oriented plans outlining what steps need to be taken to recover; bring together information and services; and monitor progress to reach goals.
