Internews is continuing our work in both Sudan and South Sudan to provide urgent, life-saving support to people affected by the ongoing crisis.
In Sudan, Internews is continuing its social media listening to understand how people affected by the crisis are using social media to get the information they need when other information sources have broken down. Internews is also setting up a digital platform that will provide updated information on where people can access health and legal services and be able to answer any questions people have about life-saving needs and services. This two-way platform will also identify and address harmful misinformation circulating within communities.
Between 14 September and 16 October 2023, Internews collected 224 rumors, perceptions, and comments in Arabic and English shared by people affected by conflict in Sudan on social media platforms like Facebook, Reddit, TikTok, Twitter, and WhatsApp. Our most recent flash update goes into more detail about the trends, rumors, and misinformation identified.
In South Sudan, people are still arriving from Sudan in need of basic support around food, water, health and safety, but they also need information. Internews and its partner CEN have teams on the border, working with the World Food Programme to provide the necessary information. Teams of Community Correspondents listen to and record community feedback - questions, concerns, suggestions and rumors. This information is then provided to humanitarian responders to ensure they meet people's specific needs and respond to any questions. Internews and CEN also produce audio programs, played at key points in the community, to share information with communities they need - about how they can access food and water, ways to register for assistance, and how to get transport to their homes.
Internews remains committed to supporting our Sudanese partners and the wider humanitarian response. With flexible funding thanks to partners like GlobalGiving, Internews has acted rapidly and proactively since the start of the crisis in Sudan.
You make our critical work possible. Thank you for your continued support.
