In 2005, Internews built three humanitarian radio stations in Eastern Chad to help those fleeing the violence in Darfur. Now ten years after Internews' departure, we take pride in the fact that these volunteer-run stations are still fully operational. But now they're adapting to respond to the needs of the 500,000+ refugees who have fled from the conflict in Sudan – over half of which are currently residing in Chad and South Sudan.
Internews is working with one of these radio stations, La Voix du Ouaddai, to create an Information Ecosystem Assessment to better understand the needs of refugees in Chad and inform both the local radio and wider humanitarian response.
Internews in Sudan has also pivoted its three-year-long project on health misinformation to address the current crisis, engaging in social media listening and rumor tracking to understand what conflict-affected communities need, what their concerns are, and what questions they have for the humanitarian response.
In this rapidly changing and dangerous context, whether on the move or in place, people need reliable information to keep themselves and their loved ones safe. Internews collects and analyzes this data and releases it in usable formats for the humanitarian community to ensure the voices of the affected are being elevated to those with the power to respond.
Internews remains committed to supporting our Sudanese partners and the wider humanitarian response. With flexible funding thanks to partners like GlobalGiving, Internews has acted rapidly and proactively since the start of the crisis in Sudan.
