Expanding Digital Learning Opportunities for Students in Rural Ghana

By Christina Randazzo | Friends of Adaklu Volunteer

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, Friends of Adaklu continues to expand digital literacy and educational opportunities for students in rural Ghana. Over the past six months, we have introduced an exciting new program while continuing to strengthen our existing computer education programs.

One of our newest initiatives is the FOA Scholars Program, which currently has approximately 30 students participating. Students meet three times a week to strengthen essential academic and digital skills, including typing, mathematics, phonics, and English language skills. Through online learning platforms and guided instruction, students work at their own pace, build confidence, and develop skills that will help them succeed in school and beyond.

We are also excited to have recently introduced a weekly virtual writing class led by Julia, a volunteer instructor from California. Most participants are ninth grade students who are developing their English writing and communication skills. They are currently learning about literary devices and exploring how writers use language to express ideas and tell stories. This class is a wonderful example of how technology can connect students in rural Ghana with educational opportunities and teachers from around the world.

Alongside these new initiatives, our Learning Upgrade program continues to help students strengthen their reading, English, and mathematics skills through interactive lessons. Kingsley, our computer literacy instructor, also continues to provide hands-on computer education, helping students develop essential technology skills and become more confident using computers.

Our biggest challenge is keeping up with the growing number of students who want to participate. We simply do not have enough computers and tablets to meet the demand. Students are eager to learn, but limited access to devices makes it difficult to provide everyone with the time and resources they need. Additional computers and tablets would allow us to welcome more students, provide more opportunities for individual learning, and expand our programs to reach more children.

We are encouraged by the enthusiasm and dedication of our students. Their willingness to spend extra time learning outside of school shows just how much these opportunities mean to them.

Giving Tuesday is coming on December 1! This is a wonderful opportunity to make an even greater difference. Donations made through GlobalGiving on Giving Tuesday will be eligible for a special boost, helping your generosity go even further. Your support can help us provide more computers and tablets so that more students have the opportunity to learn and develop essential digital skills.

Thank you for making these programs possible! Your generosity is helping students gain the academic knowledge, digital skills, and confidence they need to build brighter futures. With your continued support, we hope to reach even more students and ensure that every child who wants to learn has the opportunity to do so.
