Executive Summary

The Integrated Women & Youth Livelihoods and Community Cohesion Project aims to improve the socio-economic resilience of women and youth through sustainable livelihood opportunities, entrepreneurship, agricultural development, vocational skills training, and strengthened community cohesion. During the first six months, the project made significant progress in establishing community structures, mobilizing beneficiaries, delivering livelihood training, and supporting income-generating activities.

The implementation period focused on laying a strong foundation through community engagement, capacity building, beneficiary identification, formation of savings and producer groups, agricultural support, and vocational skills development. Community participation remained high despite operational challenges related to poor road infrastructure and seasonal weather conditions.

Overall, the project is on track to achieve its intended outcomes, with encouraging evidence of improved household income opportunities, increased participation of women and youth in local economic activities, and strengthened collaboration among community members.

    Success Story

One women's savings group used its accumulated savings to establish a collective vegetable production enterprise. Through improved farming techniques introduced by the project, members increased production and generated additional household income. The group has since expanded its savings activities and plans to diversify into poultry production, demonstrating the project's contribution to sustainable livelihoods and women's economic empowerment.

    Challenges Encountered

Several challenges affected implementation during the reporting period:

    • Poor road infrastructure limiting access to remote communities.
    • Seasonal heavy rains affecting transportation and field activities.
    • High demand for livelihood support exceeding available project resources.
    • Limited access to markets for agricultural products.
    • Rising prices of agricultural inputs.

Despite these constraints, implementation remained largely on schedule through close coordination with community leaders and flexible activity planning.

Key lessons emerging during the first six months include:

    • Community ownership significantly improves project sustainability.
    • Combining technical skills with financial literacy enhances business success.
    • Village Savings and Loan Associations provide an effective platform for economic resilience.
    • Women's participation increases when activities are scheduled around household responsibilities.
    • Continuous coaching following training improves adoption of new livelihood practices.

Recommendations for the Second Half of Implementation

To maximize project impact during the remaining implementation period, the project recommends:

    • Expand technical coaching for beneficiary groups.
    • Strengthen market linkages for agricultural products.
    • Increase mentorship for youth entrepreneurs.
    • Continue support to Village Savings and Loan Associations.
    • Strengthen monitoring of income and livelihood outcomes.
    • Promote value addition and business diversification.
    • Enhance collaboration with local government services for sustainability.

    Conclusion

The first six months of implementation demonstrate encouraging progress toward achieving the project's objectives. Community participation has remained strong, livelihood activities are expanding, and women and youth are increasingly engaged in productive economic opportunities. While operational challenges persist, the project remains on course to deliver its intended outcomes. Continued technical support, market development, and strengthening of community structures during the remaining implementation period will further enhance sustainability and long-term impact.
