Integrated Women & Youth Livelihoods and Community

Summary

Grand Bandundu (Mai Ndombe, Kwilu, Kwango) is home to Yaka-Teke communities and has faced insecurity, weak infrastructure, and displacement, worsened by the Mobondo movement. Predominantly rural (7-9 million people, mostly youth), livelihoods rely on subsistence farming and informal trade, with limited access to finance and weak market links. Proximity to Kinshasa offers strong potential due to high urban demand for food products.

Challenge

Despite its economic potential, Grand Bandundu faces key challenges. Households-especially women-led-have limited income opportunities and weak access to markets. Youth and women lack vocational, entrepreneurial, and financial tools. Social fragility from past insecurity has eroded trust and collaboration. High-demand products like vegetables, cassava, and honey are underproduced due to limited technical and supply chain capacity.

Solution

1. Enhance agricultural productivity and market access: o Support production of high-demand crops (vegetables, cassava) and organic honey through modern farming and beekeeping techniques. o Facilitate market linkages with urban centers, particularly Kinshasa, to ensure income generation and value-chain integration. 2. Increase financial inclusion and entrepreneurship: o Establish and support VSLAs as part of women's economic empowerment activities. o Provide training in business management, ....

Long-Term Impact

The project is expected to strengthen household incomes, particularly for women and youth, through improved access to skills, markets, and financial tools. Increased production of high-demand commodities will enhance food security and market integration, especially with urban centers. Strengthened social cohesion and local collaboration will support more resilient communities, enabling sustainable economic growth and inclusive development across the region.
