This project will provide 65 youth and elders in Houston, Texas, with movement and sound therapy, using music and dance to improve physical health and mental wellness in communities experiencing feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression. The project will also train up to 10 trainers to carry the program into other communities.
Almost 400,000 Houston residents are 60 and older, and another 450,000 are ages 5-19, according to Neilsberg Research. While youth and elders make up approximately 40% of the population, both groups still experience significant physical and mental health challenges. With Houston's booming population growth, the demand for community services outpaces available resources for physical activity and mental wellness programs. This pilot program will be a model impacting nearly 1 million Houstonians.
IAA provides youth and elders with a creative way to increase their physical activity and tools to support their mental wellness. Using traditional Indian music and dance, the project preserves artistic practices, nurtures creativity, supports local artists, and spreads cultural knowledge within Houston's diverse communities.
The project will be a pilot program designed for all mobility levels. It will teach 65 youth and elders breath work, body mapping, and movement combinations to improve physical and mental health. It will also train approximately 10 trainers to establish the program throughout the Houston area.
