By Maria Gugerty | Vice President, 4GIRLS Organization
Greetings everyone,
The 4GIRLS Organization is very excited to announce that after six years in Long Beach, CA, on Saturday, August 20th, we expanded our footprint and launched our very first Orange County, CA workshop. The event was held at the West Anaheim Youth Center.
Being that it was the first workshop in this community, we did not know how many girls we would attract. We were very surprised and thrilled to have 45 middle school girls in attendance along with 10 Junior Mentors! The Junior Mentor is a high school aged girl that works closely with an Adult Mentor during the workshop to facilitate conversation at their assigned table and encourage the girls in their group to fully participate in the program. And participate in the program they did!
After a day filled with empowering and inspiring content, including sessions on self esteem, positive self talk, self defense, healthy bodies, and yoga, the girls used their voices to share a positive word or two that they had selected for themselves during the workshop. 4GIRLS believes that we create our world through our words, so it was once again humbling and fulfilling to hear these young girls share their positive messages with the group in such a courageous and confident way.
And speaking of courage and confidence, our Keynote Speaker, the Emmy winning writer/producer of the documentary "Mendez v. Westminster: For All the Children/Para Todos los Ninos”, Sandra Robbie, shared the amazing and little known story of Mexican Americans who in 1946 won a class action lawsuit to desegregate the school system in Westminster, CA. This took place 8 years before the landmark Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education. It was quite an enlightening session.
Overall, it was a great day and our mission to inspire and empower middle school girls was accomplished! Thank you all for your continued support and sponsorship of our organization!
Sincerely,
The 4GIRLS Board of Directors
