The last 6 months at the Jugaad Lab has been a journey of massive internal growth for everyone involved. Although FAT has had a slow period due to a number of changes inside the organization, our direction with the Jugaad Lab has only grown stronger.
In January, the managing team spent their time writing process documentation for the past year at Jugaad Lab. Along with that, a yearly report for EMpower was completed. Surbhi, an external consultant for FAT conducted an evaluation of level 1 participants.
In February and March, the Jugaad Lab was shut down for maintenance and planning for the next project year. In April, the focus shifted to creating work plans for the team for the year.
Starting May, the Jugaad Lab began working on full steam. First of all, the layout of the lab was renovated for more efficiency. A ‘Makers’ Space’ was brainstormed and created for participants and FAT members. During this time, a lot of hands-on work was done by everyone involved. Ruby (pictured below) envisioned, designed, and built a tool board for the ‘Makers Space’. This was her first time using power tools. She used this opportunity to learn more about the purpose of various tools and how efficiency relates with them. The latter half of the month was spent reviewing the curriculum for the lab and improvements were discussed and finalized.
June was a very active and fun month. The major happening was the convocation for the graduates of our level 2 program. They received certificates and goodie bags sponsored by Twitter. What’s even better news is that one of our graduates, KumKum, was accepted into an engineering institute to complete her Diploma in Electrical Engineering. She’s the first girl in her community to get an opportunity to be a professional in technology, and this shows that our Jugaad Lab has made a small change in the social norms within the community.
The girls visited the Delhi offices of ‘Makers’ Asylum’ to understand how a space built for makers and tinkerers operate in preparation for building our aforementioned ‘Makers’ Space’. This exposure visit was filled with a lot of learning and exploration. The girls built robots that follow a light source and learned about electronics and new tools.
We were also visited by Fellows of Professional Fellows Program organized by the U.S. State Department. The team included government councilors from the state of Ohio, and also included team members of the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi. A discussion was held on understanding each other’s cultures and lives.
The monsoons started this month. One day, since our lab is in the basement, we found it flooded and many of our books got soaked. Pinky immediately got to work and found a solution to fix the problem. She grabbed tools and lifted the bookshelf to prevent it from happening again.
Starting July, classes across all levels of the Jugaad Lab are beginning. We have a great year planned ahead and can’t wait to share about it in the coming months.
