Since 2009, The Action Foundation has improved the quality of life of children and youth with disabilities in informal communities through outreach centers and partnerships. We've impacted over 20,000 lives. To meet growing demand, we are building an Innovation and Community Center to provide the children and their families with health and education services, training, and mental health support. With your help, we can expand our impact, offering vital resources and a supportive community.
One in five people living in poverty in Kenya has a disability. Nearly half a million school-age children with disabilities are out of school and face severe social stigma. This is even more so for girls and women. Lack of professionals trained in evidence-based inclusive education and healthcare and few accessible health and education centers deepens the exclusion, poverty, and neglect of persons with disabilities and their caregivers. More support is needed!
The Innovation and Community Center (ICC) will address these gaps by training on and modeling health and education innovations through direct services in early childhood development, youth mentorship, and caregiver support. It will feature a state-of-the-art sensory room, mental health hub, adaptive playground, and meeting spaces, offering more support to the community and expanding our capacity to serve more individuals, families, and organizations to ensure a stronger community impact.
The programs provided in the ICC will allow The Action Foundation to continue to grow and innovate, leading to transformational shifts in community attitudes through increased community and leadership conversations, caregiver empowerment, and independence for persons with disabilities. In the long term, activities in the ICC will unite key actors to strengthen education and health systems, train educators, and drive social change leading to improved quality of life for persons with disabilities.
