We ended the summer on a high note as our India Hospice and Palliative Care project’s local project leader, Dr. C. M. Tripathi, returned to Madhya Pradesh after a month-long training at Horizon Home Health and Hospice, Boise, Idaho, and started the hospice and palliative program at Ujjain District Hospital. Dr. Tripathi and his hospice and palliative care team have already served 32 terminally-ill patients and their families in less than six weeks since the services began. The volume of patients, in itself, speaks for the tremendous need for hospice and palliative care services in this region.

Among the several barriers to providing hospice and palliative care services in resource-poor communities, lack of trained healthcare providers, and the lack of infrastructure remain at the top of the list. The next phase of this project involves the training of local nurses in their own setting. A group of hospice and palliative care nurses will be traveling to India this Winter to train nurses at Ujjain District Hospital. This training will be followed by a four-week training in the USA in Spring of 2018. The goal is to create a high-quality team of hospice and palliative care providers who not only provide hospice and palliative care services to patients, but who can also serve as master trainers to train other providers in other parts of the state.

Thank you for your continued support!  With your help, we are able to train the local healthcare providers and help them create models and services which are based on evidence, that are culturally appropriate and sustainable.
