(Story from Rajasthan)
Mahesh was born deafblind, but his condition worsened after an infection in his eyes when he was ten years old. He was largely dependent on his family for his day-to-day activities. When he was 16, he enrolled in a home-based project run by Sense India and its partner.
A special educator visited him thrice a week to help him perform his daily activities on his own. He learnt sign language and gestures to communicate his needs and learnt to identify colours, objects, toys, fruits, animals and birds.
Then at our vocational training unit, he learnt how to exchange goods for money. Soon, he was working in his father’s shop and making paper bags. Mahesh’s earnings from our income generation activities helped his father save enough money to buy a refrigerator.
His father’s shop now sells cold drinks. This means better income for the family. And it’s all thanks to Mahesh!
