Deafblindness is a unique disability due to which the children and adults face challenges is fulfilling their educational needs. Sense International India has been striving to support them by providing resources and need based trainings so that they are able to access education.
Hriday is a 15-year-old young adult with deafblindness from Tripura. He has Nystagmus (an involuntary movement of the eye which may cause the eye to move rapidly from side to side, up-down or in a circle which causes the vision to blur), restricted vision field, speech impairment, hearing impairment in his right ear along with poor functioning of the legs. Hriday is very enthusiastic guy who looks forward to learning something new every day.
Sense India met Hriday in 2020. He was good at finding his way around the house but lacked in academics. The first challenge Hriday tackled was to learn sign language and numbers. He could sign 'Good Morning' and began to recognise and write numbers from 0 to 3. He could recognise colours, throw a basketball upto two feet and started to read two letter Bengali words like 'Jal' and 'Kal'.
Hriday's name means "Heart" in Bengali and Hindi, and we believe that is why he does everything from the heart. His parents say, "He has made so much progress in such a short time! If we give him some time, we are sure he will progress so much more." Hriday's teacher says, "It's so much fun to teach him as he learns from the heart."
Hriday wants to lead an independent life and is working towards it with the help of his dedicated educator and a loving family.
The support received from donors through GlobalGiving has helped Sense India to provide the required resources and training to so many children with deafblindness and multiple disabilities like Hriday to enable them to access education and bringing them closer to their dreams.
