Laxmi, named after the goddess of prosperity, took up sex work at age 13. Her mother had wanted her to go to school, get an education, get a job….but circumstances decided otherwise. Rani was 14 when she dropped out of school because her mother couldn’t afford the expenses. Her mother is also in sex work and has experienced many financial, social and emotional difficulties.
However, Rani and her mother received counselling and support. Rani is now back in the 8th standard and attends regularly.
Intervening at the correct time with information and assistance made the difference in Rani’s life.
“We are India’s Children” seeks to facilitate access to education and creating options for children of sex workers through a spectrum of support. The aim is to protect these children and ensure they have a better future.
