In India, children are forced to drop out of school because their parents cannot afford to pay their school fees, but for some children the situation is much worse. They are ostracized simply because of the profession of a parent. Children of sex workers are one of the most vulnerable and marginalized groups in our country, and it is through absolutely no fault of their own.
No child chooses the circumstance they are born into. You can help ensure that no child is doomed to remain trapped in his or her birth circumstance. Imagine if your child got separated from you on the busy streets of your city. Wouldn't you want a stranger to help them find their way back to you? There are 87138 children who are lost between the ages of 5 and 19; out of these 17589 children (20%) are not enrolled in any formal education program.
The children of sex workers are lost and in need of guidance, direction and mentorship to lead them to a different future. Our project seeks to facilitate access to quality education and building self-reliance of children of sex workers through a spectrum of support. From financial support to linkages with various scholarship programs, training, mentoring and counselling. Also, imparting them with employability skills through vocational trainings.
Education is the key to breaking the cycle of sex work and poverty. Education empowers kids to make better life-decisions, by giving them choices they would not otherwise have. Education provides the support systems they need, builds their self-confidence and provides a sense of security and community that every child needs to thrive.
