Thanks to a Rotary Global Grant and the support of several Rotary Clubs, Uhambo is providing disability services to Newcastle, South Africa, a city southeast of Johannesburg. Approximately 5,200 people and 2,600 children in this region have a mobility-related disability. By building the capacity healthcare workers, caregivers and members of the community through training and workshops, it will also provide opportunities for inclusion for chidlren and reduce the stigma associated with disabilities.
Occupational therapists at the provincial hospital are being trained. Many children have been on a wheelchair waiting list through the government. This grant is helping to provide chairs to those on the list and training the staff af the hospital who will be serving them.
"A wheelchair is something that seems like a small thing but it makes such a big difference. Now, these children will be able to feel like part of the family and they will be able to to interact with the world," said Claire Samuels, an Occupational Therapist at the hospital.
