Work Update July - Sep 2017

We thank the donors for committing to the conservation of Indian Pangolin. Also, we are grateful to the Global Giving for providing the platform to spread a word about our work and fundraising. Here is

Pangolin Survey

  • Sahyadri has selected 85 villages in Chiplun block and Khed block of Ratnagiri district in Maharashtra for the conservation of Indian Pangolin. In the reporting period, i.e. July to September 2017, intensive trap camera based survey was conducted in six villages wherein Indian Pangolin or its activity was reported in the recent past. These six villages were Kanjar, Chiveli, Tamhanmala, Kosabi, Peve and Talavli. Camera traps were deployed at various locations in these villages with help of local community members. Total 10 trap camera devices were used. A range of habitats were covered. In the report duration total 229 camera days were completed.  However, none of the camera traps has got any Pangolin activity. There were observable signs of Pangolin activity at some locations.

Awareness Drives

  • Sahyadri has continued conducting meetings and interaction with local communities to convey the importance of conservation of Indian Pangolin.
  • Special pamphlets in Marathi (local language), highlighting the urgency of protecting the Indian Pangolin have been designed. These pamphlets are used in the meetings as dissemination material.
  • A letter addressed to elected heads and office bearers -  Sarpanch (Village head), Police Patil (Representative of Police in the Village) and President, Tantamukti Committee (committee for dispute free village) – mentioning importance of Indian Pangolin and appeal to contribute in the conservation was sent to 85 villages in the project area.
  • Awareness boards (4 Ft X 3 Ft) have been installed at the prominent locations in the project area.
