Project implementation report - Isalalo

By IMANI HAULE MATHIAS | GENERAL MANAGER OF THE ORGANIZATION

Introduction
This report outlines the progress of the WASH project implemented by SHIPO at Isalalo Primary School in Mbozi District. The initiative seeks to address the challenges posed by inadequate water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities, with a particular emphasis on improving conditions for girls.

Project Overview
The project’s primary objective is to mitigate WASH challenges caused by limited access to clean water and insufficient student latrines. The key components include the construction of a girls’ latrine block with 8 drop-holes, a changing room/menstrual hygiene management (MHM) unit, and an incinerator. Additionally, water facilities such as a water point and a handwashing station with 8 hygienic taps are planned for development. The target is to complete all components by December 2023.

Progress Summary
Significant progress has been made in the construction of the girls’ latrine block. The block, featuring 8 drop-holes, has been fully constructed and includes an MHM unit with a changing room and an incinerator. This improvement has reduced the girl-to-drop-hole ratio from 1:78 to 1:31, representing a 52% reduction and moving closer to the recommended SWASH guideline of 1:20.

Community engagement efforts have also been successfully completed. Community awareness and sensitization meetings were held to encourage good governance and parental involvement. Local community members actively participated in project supervision and management, fostering a sense of ownership and ensuring sustainability.

However, the development of water facilities remains pending due to funding challenges. Plans to install a water point and a handwashing facility with 8 hygienic taps are on hold while efforts to secure the necessary funding continue.

Challenges
The project faces two key challenges. First, a funding shortfall has delayed the completion of water facilities. Second, sustaining community engagement requires consistent follow-up and motivation to ensure ongoing participation and commitment.

Recommendations
To address these challenges, SHIPO should enhance fundraising efforts by pursuing additional funding sources to expedite the installation of water facilities. Long-term community involvement can be promoted through follow-up sessions and capacity-building programs to strengthen community ownership and ensure sustainability. Regular monitoring and evaluation should also be implemented to track progress and address any emerging issues with the constructed latrines.

Conclusion
The successful completion of the girls’ latrine block at Isalalo Primary School marks a significant step toward improving WASH conditions in Mbozi District. However, the project’s full impact depends on the installation of water facilities, which remains a priority. SHIPO is committed to securing the required resources and ensuring sustainable outcomes through active community participation and effective project management.
