Since its founding in 2008 JAAN started to help the carriage horses working in Jakarta's heat and busy traffic. The carriage horses' are pushed over their limits with little or no medical care provided. Often the owners and handlers don't have much knowledge about horse care and the carriage horses are literally worked to their very early death, when normally with better care, horses can reach a very old age. Horses are not provided the correct food or rest areas.
Not only the welfare of the horses is at stake, but the use of these horses in Central Jakarta also endangers the traffic and general safety of people. In 2010 a ban on Carriage horses was implemented by the city administration but sadly, now we see carriage horses again being used in the center of Jakarta. Horses that are hit by cars or motorcycles are beaten by the owners to get up.
JAAN has developed an SOP guideline for horse owners to follow and will register those owners that agree to improving conditions for their horses. JAAN will provide training for horse owners, proper food for the horses, horse shoes and medical care. A sanctuary will be established for old or sick horses
JAAN will continue to campaign the government to ban the use of carriage horses in Jakarta. Hopefully in time, this practice will be discontinued entirely.
