Improving lives of 500 rural farmers in N. Uganda

Project Report | May 6, 2019
First Season

By Haley Block | Director of Programs

The rainy season has finally come to Northern Uganda and now our farmers are ready to start planting!

The project currently has 700 farmers in Oyam district divided into 21 different groups. Each group has elected leaders and begun creating demonstration gardens for chia and soy beans. The demonstration gardens are used as a teaching tool to help farmers learn best practices for the crops they are growing. Following the training at the demonstraion gardens, the farmers were given chia seeds to begin planting. Chia is a new product to many of the farmers and they are very excited to have the opportuntiy to grow this new plant. Chia also has a huge return on investment. With just one kilogram of seeds, a farmer can plant 1 acre of land and sell up to 20 kilograms. However, selling that many kilograms can be challenging. So FICH has liased with a local buyer who has the potential, and has promised, to buy all the chia grown by our farmers this season. This relationship guarantees the farmers a market for their product.

We are very excited for this first planting season. Our farmers are busy doing what they do best and we look forward to seeing their bountiful harvests in a few months.
