Improving access to education in Uganda

For many children in rural Serere District, getting to school is one of the biggest challenges they face each day. Long distances, poor roads, and concerns about safety continue to prevent many students—especially girls—from accessing quality education consistently.

Gloria, a 15-year-old student from Kadungulu Secondary School knows this challenge all too well.

Every weekday, she woke before dawn to begin the nearly two-hour walk to school. During the rainy season, muddy roads often forced her to arrive late, while the scorching afternoon walk home left her exhausted. By the time she completed her household chores, there was little energy left for homework or revision.

Her declining grades worried her teachers, and her parents feared that the daily struggle would eventually force her to leave school.

Everything changed when Gloria received a bicycle through Resilient Villages Uganda's education project.
Today, Gloria reaches school in less than 40 minutes.

She no longer misses morning lessons, participates actively in class, and has enough time after school to study before darkness falls. The bicycle has also given her greater confidence and independence, allowing her to focus on achieving her dreams instead of worrying about the journey.

"Before I received my bicycle, I thought the road to school would stop me from achieving my dreams. Now I know that I can finish my education and become someone who helps my community. Every morning I ride to school with hope."

Gloria's story is being repeated across the communities we serve. Parents report improved attendance, teachers observe better concentration in class, and students are spending more time learning instead of walking.

A bicycle may seem simple, but for vulnerable girls, it represents much more than transportation. It is a pathway to education, safety, confidence, and opportunity. It reduces the barriers that keep girls out of school and gives them the chance to build brighter futures.
