Bicycles improve the safety of young people who travel long distances between their homes and schools. They also facilitate earlier arrival at school for girls in the morning and more time for homework in the evening. This issue is critical because girls disproportionately shoulder household chores. They are often expected to complete housework before attending school each morning and, in the evenings, take on tasks like cooking, cleaning, gathering firewood or water, and caring for younger siblings or elderly relatives. These responsibilities make balancing long commutes with studies difficult.
Before the project, Faith often considered dropping out of school. The 8 km walk was long, and boda boda riders frequently harassed her with offers of rides in exchange for favors. With her new bicycle, Faith cycles independently and safely, cutting her commute time by two-thirds. The independence has strengthened her parents' belief in her education. She now balances schoolwork and farming duties without missing lessons. Faith says: "My bicycle has freed me from fear. Now I see myself as a future nurse who will serve my community."
This story shows how Bicycles are transforming not only education but also safety, health, and community attitudes towards girls futures.
