Enabling Government Teachers in Yadagiri District of Karnataka State (INDIA)
TTF implemented Sustained Teacher Development Programme for 100 rural govt school teachers in Shahapura Taluka of Yadagiri District with the support of Global Giving. The project aims to benefit 40,000 students studying in the government schools. We conducted the programme in seven clusters namely Hattigudur, B,Gudi, Halagera, Wadagera,Naikal, Halisagar and Dharnalli.
Shahapur is one of the educational block under Yadagiri Educational district. We implemented “Darpana” programme which includes 5 days of training and two rounds of school based support. We have completed 5 modules namely 'Learning in Groups', 'Learning Spectrum', Tool for Teaching', Measuring Learning', Multiple Intelligence' and ' Designing Learning'. We shared different group strategies with teachers and facilitated collaborative learning in their classrooms. The participants were given hands-on experience on techniques like think-pair-share, snow balling, envoying, jigsaw, fish bowl and carousel. In the 'Learning Spectrum' module, we covered a range of activities that can make classroom environment more lively and vibrant. We have given inputs on how to use the black board , bulletin board, and newspapers effectively to improve learning. Simple ideas that work brilliantly. Learning outside classroom was also a part of this module. In the ' Tools for Teaching module, we covered different learning strategies like example-non example, 20 questions etc. In the 'Measuring Learning' Module, we covered different assessment techniques for student learning. In the 'Multiple Intelligence' and 'Designing Learning' module , students multiple intelligence in classroom process and how do we cater to different intelligence is dealt . Preparing effective lesson plan is another area that was dealt in the training programme.
Government Official of Shahapur deputed 112 teachers for the programme, out of which 100 teachers have attended all 5 days of 'Darpana' Programme. Some of them didn't attend the programme because of transfer, deputation, promotion etc.. Government Officials were very co operative and attended few sessions to understand the content of the module. They even discussed with our facilitators about their doubts and clarified it. Overall, the programme went off well with the support of the concerned officials – which is a crucial aspect in these regions.
Most of the teachers were eager to learn new ideas, strategies which we use in training situation. They were enthusiastic and reflective on all the days. Teachers have expressed happiness over the method of training and facilitation. They felt that the content was relevant and useful.

School Based Support (SBS):
Before the commencement of the actual training, TTF administered “Classroom Observation Checklist”, a tool developed in-house to assess the teaching-learning process, for a sample of 15% teachers to identify the need areas and to track the changes in their performance. An evaluation report will be shared with you as soon as possible.
And we have completed 1st round and 2nd round of school based support for all participating teachers of our programme. TTF facilitators observe the class and provide constructive feedback to teachers. We discuss about the lesson – what went well, what areas need to improve and plan of action for the next class. We notice that many teachers incorporate the learnings from the workshop into their classrooms.
Teachers who have participated in all the training sessions will be provided Certificate of Completion. The graduation ceremony for these teachers will be held in the month of February.
Very soon we will share the evaluation report of this project.
Conclusion:
We developed good rapport with department education for smooth functioning of the programme. Education department officials also gave feedback about the programme, and expressed that our teachers were very happy about the programme content and liked TTF facilitation.
We wish to continue the programme with more teachers during 2013-14. It has been a great experience to work with Government teachers. Though they have undergone lot of training from the department – they appreciated our methodology and approach.
We wish to thank GlobalGiving for providing us a great platform for all our donors for making generous contributions for an educational cause.
