Older People's Associations Update

By Jason Bowles | Fundraising Manager

The village Older People’s Associations taking part in the project have now started to make seed money loans to some of their members. With your help, these small loans are already making a big difference – especially for older people who are also supporting their grandchildren while their children have moved to the city to find work.

Ms. Apei, who is 74, bought seven rams with her loan. Now these rams are growing well and will bring an income for her and her family. She says, “Just forget my age, please. I am still useful. Nowadays our living conditions have been dramatically improved. Each older person can eat rice and meat every day. We are healthier than ever before.” Villages in one of the project areas, Sichuan, are still recovering from severe damage in the earthquake in May. One man aged 94 describes his village: “Jiala Village is a poor and remote village. During the massive earthquake on May 12, 2008, many houses collapsed, and the water pipelines connecting most farm houses were broken, which caused certain difficulties to the older people.” By working together and supporting each other, older people are now playing a key role in the reconstruction.

We really appreciate your support for this vital project. Please let us know what you think and what you’d like to hear about in the next update!
