On The Teacher Foundation's 10th Anniversary, TEN runners are running in the TCS TEN km run to raise $7,000 to support one Whole School Turnaround project and benefit 6,000 children. Through Whole School Turnaround, TTF aims to create sustained change in student learning outcomes by intensive efforts at the school infrastructure, policy, teaching, learning and assessment levels.
The learning levels of Indian children are drastically coming down, say many surveys and studies. When we look at affordable private schools in India, there are many factors contributing to this. Parents are mostly illiterate and do not know what they can hold school accountable for. School Managements hold teachers accountable for the wrong things and do not understand teaching and learning. Teachers are ill equipped and have limited knowledge.
Working directly with children is not enough to change learning levels. Improving schools and teachers is the key! During Whole School Turnaround, The Teacher Foundation works with the school management, principals, teachers, parents and students. This will help parents become more empowered and involved. School Management will develop a better understanding of teaching and learning. The project will help Teachers improve their content knowledge and knowledge of effective teaching strategies.
TTF will work with one affordable private school in Bangalore with 600 children, during Whole School Turnaround. There will be an overall improvement of 20% in academic competency i.e literacy & numeracy skills of children in the school. There will also be 50% increase in academic competency of students who academically comprise the bottom one-third of the class. WST in 1 school will benefit 6,000 children over period of 10 years.
