Your donation will help to transform the lives of 810 marginalised young women who are illiterate and have little or no education. You will help them to escape a vicious cycle of poverty. You will empower them to feed themselves and their families, send their children to school and pay for vital medicine. Your donation will do this by funding life-changing training for the young women. They will learn how to create, develop and adapt their own business.
Civil wars resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Liberians and destroyed the Liberian economy. Following a peace treaty, the country slowly started to recover economically. However, the country was then hit by the devastating Ebola crisis. As a result of these years of wars and epidemics, the vast majority of Liberians, around 85%, live below the international poverty line. Girls and young women, particularly those who are illiterate, are often the most deprived in the country.
Peace Child, together with your help, will help 810 deprived young women escape poverty. The project will empower the young women to afford food, vital medicines and send their children to school. It will give the young women life-changing skills in how to create and manage a business that will give them enough income to sustain themselves and their families for life. The project uses image-based training materials that are highly tailored to meet the needs of illiterate young women.
The impact of the project long term is dramatic. The project will transform the lives of the young women who will become financially independent for life. As a result of this, they will be able to send their children to school and support their families. The young women who take part in the project will also share the knowledge they have learned with their local community. The project significantly contributes to gender equality in Liberia as the young women are economically empowered.
