In the Age of Artificial Intelligence, Mathematical Thinking Matters More Than Ever
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the world in which our children are growing up. Today, AI can solve complex mathematical problems, generate texts, summarize information, and provide answers within seconds. This raises an increasingly important question for education: What should children learn in a world where technology can provide so many of the answers?
We believe that the answer lies not in teaching children to compete with artificial intelligence, but in helping them develop the skills that will enable them to use technology thoughtfully, responsibly, and effectively.
At the heart of these skills is critical thinking – and mathematical thinking is one of its strongest foundations.
Learning mathematics is not simply about memorizing formulas, following procedures, or finding the correct answer. Meaningful mathematics education teaches children to analyze information, recognize patterns, make connections, develop strategies, test different approaches, learn from mistakes, and explain their reasoning.
These are exactly the skills that young people need in the age of artificial intelligence.
JUMP Math: Building Confident and Independent Thinkers
For more than a decade, the Institute for Progressive Education has worked to make high-quality mathematics education accessible to more children in Bulgaria through JUMP Math.
The JUMP Math methodology is based on a fundamental belief: every child can succeed in mathematics when given the right support, appropriate challenges, and the opportunity to experience success.
Through carefully structured learning, small steps, continuous feedback, and active student participation, JUMP Math helps children build not only mathematical knowledge but also confidence in their own ability to think and learn.
This is becoming increasingly important.
In a world where answers are instantly available through artificial intelligence, children need to know how to ask good questions, evaluate information, recognize mistakes, compare different solutions, and make informed decisions.
Mathematical thinking provides a foundation for all of these abilities.
When students learn to solve a mathematical problem, they are also learning to persist when the answer is not immediately obvious. They learn to break complex challenges into smaller steps. They learn to look for evidence, identify relationships, justify their reasoning, and reconsider their approach when necessary.
These are not only mathematical skills. They are essential skills for life, learning, and active participation in the world of the future.
A New School Year Means New Opportunities
At this time of the year, schools and teachers across Bulgaria are submitting their requests to use the JUMP Math methodology during the upcoming school year.
For our team, this is an exciting period. Every new request represents a teacher who wants to improve mathematics education and a new group of children who may have the opportunity to discover that mathematics can be understandable, meaningful, and even enjoyable.
But it is also a time when we are reminded of the scale of the challenge ahead.
Many schools and families would benefit from access to high-quality educational resources and innovative teaching methodologies, but financial barriers remain a reality.
This is why we need your support more than ever.
Our goal is to enable more students to learn mathematics through JUMP Math free of charge, regardless of their family background, financial circumstances, or the resources available to their school.
With the support of our donors, we can reach more classrooms, support more teachers, and give more children access to an educational methodology that develops mathematical understanding, confidence, perseverance, and critical thinking.

Artificial intelligence will continue to change education, the workplace, and society. We cannot predict exactly what the world will look like when today’s students become adults.
