Fighting Gangs Recruiting Children in Africa

When people talk about Hanover Park and the Cape Flats, the jokes start flying. "Good luck if you visit!" they say. It’s a bit of a cliché, right? But move past the whispers and the jokes, and you’ll find a reality that’s much, much tougher. These townships are often caught in a cycle where gang leaders not schools or youth clubs are the ones recruiting the next generation. It’s a fight for the future of every kid on the street.

The spark in the courtyard The "Ignite" project wasn't born in some fancy boardroom. It started with three local legends one mom and two neighbors who had finally had enough. They were watching kids sitting on street corners for hours because the local school only offered four hours of class a day. Those street corners were the perfect hunting ground for gangs, drugs, and violence.

So, these three, who were struggling to find work themselves, started hustling. They scraped together whatever they could to make sandwiches, just to get those kids into a courtyard where they could play sports with whatever battered old equipment they could find. They didn't have a plan; they had heart.

What you’ve helped us build Since Ignite joined the Action Change family, that humble courtyard has transformed into a real-life safe haven for 124 children aged 3 to 18.

Your donations have taken us from basic sandwiches to hot meals. We’ve stocked up on stationery so our volunteers can turn that courtyard into a makeshift classroom for reading and homework help. We’re running movie nights, sports days, and community events that are finally giving the neighborhood something to cheer for.

It’s working. The courtyard is full, and the street corners are empty. That is a win.

The next climb We have a massive to-do list: we need to scrub up and secure the space, build a sustainable food garden so the kitchen never runs dry, and turn our homework sessions into a legit support program. We aren't fighting the police or the government—we’re fighting for the kids, one meal and one reading lesson at a time.

Hello friends

We wanted to share an update from our Ignite program, keeping children safe and supported in one of the most challenging communities. This project was set up by the mama’s of the community, and their dedication has been nothing short of inspiring.

Because of safety concerns, our team often has to coordinate from a distance, supporting the children and community through video calls. Even so, the mama’s have been making waves—gang members in the area are starting to work with and respect our team. As a result, the 150 children who attend our programs are staying safe and out of gang recruitment.

After school, many children would otherwise sit on the streets, vulnerable to gang influence. Our initiatives—the feeding program, homework club, cricket, football, dance, and outdoor movie nights—give them a safe space, a chance to learn, play, and just be kids. These programs are currently fully funded by supporters like you while we build long-term partnerships with local shops and businesses to make the program sustainable.
